Mech Mocha in association with IIITM and Unicef organized an event to entertain rural school kids with games on new-age platforms like iPhone and iPad. it was real fun to host them and watch their reactions to some famous games like Fruit Ninja, Jetpack. FIY, many of these kids study in schools in some remote places of Madhya Pradesh. They have seen the iPad/iPhone for the first time and had no prior extreme gaming experience. But, the way they WOWed at small things like that Fruit slashing effect of Fruit Ninja and the blast at the start of Jetpack reminded us of our own childhood days.
Our main aim of Organizing this event was to see how the rural kids would react to the games on new-age platforms.
We had something entirely different in our minds, before we saw the responses of these kids. We thought, we would have to explain them a lot and they would take time in understanding the controls and games. But, they could easily adapt to the controls of most games (advantage of casual games, may be?)
Some of the key points we noticed during the interaction with the kids:
1. Controls of the game have to be very simple. Long tutorials are not easily understood and were not well received.
2. VFX and especially music/sound effects plays an important role – very similar to the urban kids, but these kids were more excited to see awesome graphics and sounds as it was their first time.
3. Challenges played an important role.
4. Good and fast feedback from the game was well received by the kids.
They took a little time in understanding the platform, as in touch screen, etc… But, what we noticed was that, these kids were similar to any other casual gamer who loves to get into action first.
